Astrology and the Sun Sign Myth

We are all aware of our star sign, but what does it mean and what is is based on?

Our starsign (Cancer, Gemini, Taurus etc.) is determined by the suns location in the zodiac. This begs the question, what is the zodiac? Imagine the earths orbit forming a disk with the sun in the centre. Imagine this inside a big ball. On the inside of the ball are all the stars. As the earth rotates around the sun the sun "appears" to move around against the inside of the ball, always on the same track. If we divide this track into 12 more or less equal sections and draw some imaginative lines connecting the stars we get the zodiac.

The image to the right shows the day sky on the 13th of July 1064. I have made the sky black so we can see the stars and the sun. The blue borders are the arbitary dividing lines that separate the consetllations. You can see both Cancer and Gemini. The sun is the yellow blob at the centre of the "Y" that signifies Cancer. So far, all is well, but notice the date, this is 900 odd years ago.

This is an animation of the same section of sky. Each frame is 100 years after the last. There are two things to notice, the first is the progression of the sun across Cancer and into Gemini. There is also a big leap between 1564 and 1664, at this time an adjustment was made to the calendar. So what does this mean? If you were born on the 13th of July after 1600 the sun was in Gemini, not Cancer. Anybody born on the 13th of July after the year 3100 will be born when the sun is in Taurus!!! This is called the progression. The sun takes about 10,000 years to move through the whole zodiac.
