I first remember becoming interested in science started when I was a young boy living in Melbourne, Australia. I was climbing a tree when I found this clear substance oozing out of a crack. I took it to my father, and asked him what it was.
He wouldn’t tell me, not because he didn’t know, but because he thought I would be better off getting a book. Later that day, when in a bookstore, I found the How and Why Book of Trees. But next to it was the How and Why Book of Dinosaurs. I bought that instead. However it wasn’t until I was in my late 20’s that I really did anything about this lifelong interest. It was at that time I started doing volunteer diving for some PhD and Honours students at the University of Adelaide. Some years later, in 1998, I graduated from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Marine Ecology and Plant Physiology. In 1999 I started an Honours degree at the University of Adelaide, supervised by Sean Connel. You can see my Honours thesis here. I moved to the Gold Coast, in Queensland, Australia, to do research supervised by Rod Connolly. I was awarded a MPhil from Griffith University. You can download my thesis as a PDF. It is also available from the Australian Digital Theses Program as a .pdf file. The abstract and linking page for my thesis are here. My publication list, with abstracts, is here. |
