Mass Spawning of Marine Invertebrates in Southern Australia
Below are four photos of Tosia australis spawning. The top left photo has three individuals who have climbed about 30 cm up a pylon. The top right photo is a close up of the left most individual of those three, if you look closely you can see some small brown eggs being released. The bottom two photos are both of males that have climbed up to the top of the low relief reef on which they live. The bottom right photo shows a strand of undiluted semen which has travelled some distance downstream, this would have some impact on the fertilisation success.
If you have seen any spawning invertebrates in southern Australia I would love an email. I am looking for a whole bunch of information starting with 1) Time 2) Location 3) Starfish seen (even if not spawning) 4) Number of starfish spawning 5) Appearance of eggs including bouyancy However if you only get a bit of information such as "3 Uniophora seen, none spawning and 2 Tosia seen spawning at about 11:30 am at Flinders Pier" it would be great. |
